Mid-May Tokyo and the city is back to its post-Golden-Week rhythm, which is when the underground actually shows itself. Zerotokyo is running a NERO night with Luca Agnelli, VENT has its first EUFORIA evening with Takaaki Itoh, and ENTER (one of the new Shibuya rooms quietly building a programming reputation) hosts ondaloca. On the visual side, two of Tokyo's better small galleries are running shows you'll miss if you blink: Anu Saari's Jälki at Galerie Doux Dimanche in Daikanyama, and a deeply specific Sengoku-era warfare exhibition out at Taigan that's worth the train ride.

NERO feat. Luca Agnelli at ZEROTOKYO
ZEROTOKYO is the Kabukicho mega-room that opened in 2022 and has spent the last three years figuring out what it wants to be, oscillating between full-build production nights and tighter resident-led parties. NERO leans toward the second category, which is the version of this room that actually works. Luca Agnelli on the guest is exactly the kind of Italian-techno-into-percussive-machine-funk move that the Kabukicho crowd shows up for, with the gigantic Funktion-One rig doing most of the heavy lifting. Saturday's the right night. The 23:00 doors are real. Show up at midnight and the line is the line. Door is ¥3,000 with advance, ¥4,000 day-of.
Underground
EUFORIA: Hypnotic Night with Takaaki Itoh, EMILIO, DANA NADA, DANDAN
VENT spent its first five years building the case that Tokyo could sustain a Berghain-style underground room, and on a night like this it's hard to argue. Takaaki Itoh is the founder of Wols and a regular at Berghain, Tresor, and Bassiani, which puts him in the small handful of Japanese exports who actually carry weight on the European circuit, and EUFORIA's first night at the room has clearly been programmed around showcasing him. The support bench is unusually deep too (Emilio, DANA NADA, DANDAN, uuu7, SuperUser) and the door price is symbolic, which means the room will be mostly people who care. Bring your stamina. VENT goes until the trains start running, and Itoh tends to play to the room rather than the clock.

ondaloca: KANEDA, Daitto, CLESENT at ENTER Shibuya
ENTER is the most recent of the new wave of Shibuya basement rooms (Aoyama / Dogenzaka axis), and ondaloca is the kind of Wednesday-night house programming that justifies its existence. KANEDA's done a couple of strong recent EP runs on the deeper-end-of-tech-house axis, Daitto runs the local imprint behind it, and CLESENT is the wildcard you don't quite know what to expect from. ¥1,500 advance is the Tokyo midweek special, which usually means the room is more selector-and-friends than tourist club. The system at ENTER is also genuinely good, with a low-end response that feels like an upgrade from the rest of the neighborhood's older rooms. Show up at midnight. Stay later than you planned.

Anu Saari: Jälki, Traces of Finnish Forest Walks
Galerie Doux Dimanche is the kind of Daikanyama small-gallery space that programs the work nobody else in the city is going to. Jälki is Anu Saari's first solo show in Japan, a body of work built from cyanotype and gum-bichromate prints made directly on plant matter collected during her walks through Finnish forests over the last six years. The objects are small, the room is small, and the rest of the design vocabulary (a single bench, a hand-printed catalogue, the gallery dog asleep under the desk) is what makes a 20-minute visit feel like a half-day reset. Free admission. The catalogue is worth the ¥1,800. Combine with lunch at a place on Hachiyama-cho.
Museum
Warfare in the Sengoku and Oda-Toyotomi Periods at the Taigan Historical Museum
The Taigan Historical Museum is a long way from where most foreign visitors set up base, which is exactly why this show is on the list. The exhibition takes the Sengoku-era warfare narrative (the 1467 to 1615 stretch that's usually given the romance-novel treatment) and runs it back through actual archival material: maps of provincial castle networks, replica armaments, scrolls from local clan archives, and a meticulous reconstruction of the Battle of Nagashino arquebus formation. It's the kind of museum exhibition you'd struggle to mount in a major-city institution because it doesn't condescend to a casual audience, which makes the trip out there feel earned. Go on a weekday. You'll often be the only person in the room. Bring a light jacket. The climate control runs cold.
