Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca: Agua Fresca flyer

Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca: Agua Fresca

Joe's Pub Thu 21 May, 01:00

Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca at Joe's Pub on Wednesday 7pm with Agua Fresca. Barrio is one of the working flamenco bailaoras whose New York residencies have shaped the genre's contemporary scene for two decades. Joe's Pub is the right intimate scale for the bata de cola work, the front rows close enough to hear the heel work without the amplification. The Public Theater room has been steadily one of the best small dance venues in the city. Wednesday evening, formal start time, sit close.

Teen Suicide, Cloud Nothings, University, Coolant

Music Hall of Williamsburg Sat 23 May, 01:00

Teen Suicide headlining Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday 7pm with Cloud Nothings, University, and Coolant on the bill. The Maryland project, now operating under the longer name when it suits them, has built a slow patient discography of bedroom indie that translates harder live than the records suggest. Cloud Nothings is the kind of co-bill that would headline elsewhere. MHOW is the right scale for both. Williamsburg Friday late start. The pit gets restless for the louder material.

Belle & Sebastian flyer

Belle & Sebastian

The Rooftop at Pier 17 Sun 24 May, 01:00

Belle and Sebastian playing If You're Feeling Sinister in full at the Pier 17 rooftop, Saturday 7pm, plus a back half of the older catalogue. The 1996 record turned out to be the one that aged the best of the early Glasgow run and the live readings have been sharper this year than they have been for a decade. Pier 17 with the Manhattan skyline behind the stage is one of the better New York summer venues going. Bring a layer, the wind picks up after sunset.

The Black Angels, L.A. Witch flyer

The Black Angels, L.A. Witch

Brooklyn Steel Thu 21 May, 01:00

The Black Angels at Brooklyn Steel on Wednesday 7pm with L.A. Witch opening. The Austin psych-rock veterans are seventeen years into a touring schedule that has only sharpened the live show, the new material holding the older catalogue without leaning on Phosphene Dream every night. L.A. Witch are the right opener for the room, the West Coast garage feedback suiting the bigger Brooklyn Steel sound. Wednesday school-night start, doors by 6:30. Earplugs are not optional for the back half.
