The Playhouse is the right size for this, intimate enough that the front rows feel like part of the cast, generous enough with stage space that the bits can sprawl. The wildest claim in the title is accurate.
Marc Maron - Stand-Up Show
Marc Maron at Largo on a Tuesday at 8pm, free at the door for the listed. Largo at the Coronet is the venue every working LA comic talks about, and Maron has been doing extended sets there for years now. The Tuesday slot tends to pull a quieter, sharper room than the weekend bookings, which suits the kind of material he's been working through on the podcast. No phones, no two-drink minimum, just the show. The best comedy venue in the city.
Marc Maron
Marc Maron at the Elysian Theater on Friday 7:30pm. The Echo Park room has been Maron's regular workshop space for the last few years and the format is looser than the festival sets, more like the WTF tangents the podcast follows when he is in the room with the right guest. The Elysian is small enough that the front row is in play. The Atwater walk afterward is half the night. Bring cash for the bar, which runs on the modest side.
Sarah Silverman and Friends
Sarah Silverman and Friends at Largo on Saturday 8pm. The Coronet room is where every working LA comic wants to drop in unannounced and the Silverman-hosted format pulls the kind of surprise lineups that the listed bill cannot promise. No phones, no two-drink minimum, just the show. Largo is the best comedy venue in the city for this kind of evening. The door queue forms an hour early on the weekend nights. Worth the wait.
