Berlin this week: one pick from every category, May 18 to 25, 2026
A long-weekend stretch in Berlin and the open-air permits are doing their thing. Watergate's road show pulls into SAGE on Saturday with Sven Väth on the bill and the kind of daylight-to-darkness arc the city does better than anywhere. Ritter Butzke catches the Karneval der Kulturen spillover for an 18-deep free entry party that runs through Sunday night. Marina Abramović is still hosting daily at Gropius Bau, the Berliner Ensemble has a Vorauffuehrung worth catching before the press, and Cosmic Comedy is platforming a Turkish-language hour that doesn't get programmed enough.
The full live map is on the Berlin map. This is the editor's cut, one pick per category.
Parties
Karneval Open Air & Afterparty: AMÉMÉ, Super Flu, NXN, Sascha Braemer + 14 more
The Karneval der Kulturen weekend has always been the soft test of how much Berlin still has it. The parade does its thing, then the city reroutes to wherever the afterparty is, and this year Ritter Butzke catches the spillover with AMÉMÉ and Super Flu locked in for the long afternoon-into-night stretch. Free entry the whole time, a lineup that goes 18 names deep before you hit the b-room (NXN, Sascha Braemer, NenaHalena, Prismode, Markus Klee, on and on). Free Berlin techno on the Sunday of a public holiday is the kind of structural generosity the city is supposed to be known for and increasingly isn't. Show up early. The line later in the night is the kind of line you don't recover from.
Comedy
Ferhat Kaya, Live in Berlin
Cosmic Comedy's ledger leans Anglo by default, so a Turkish-language hour from Ferhat Kaya is its own small statement. Kaya arrived in 2023 from a village in Bingöl province and has been mining the gap between his hometown and his rented flat in Neukölln for material ever since. The set runs in Turkish, so this is a hard pass for the casual English-speaking expat, but if you're in the diaspora or just curious what the rest of the city is laughing at on a Monday, this is the night that doesn't show up on the Lyft ads. Bookings are at the club website. Doors are at 19:00.
Live music
White Flowers at Rough Trade Berlin
Rough Trade Berlin still feels like one of the few rooms in the city built on the assumption that you might want to actually listen. White Flowers, the Preston duo working a long Soft Cell axis of British synth melancholy, slip in on a tour cycle for a record-store set that probably caps around 100 bodies. Their stuff is wet, mid-tempo, post-punk filtered through *Top of the Pops* nostalgia, and it lands harder in a bright small room than it ever does on a 1000-cap support slot. Walk in if you can. The room sells out quietly, which is its own kind of compliment.
Art
Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic at Gropius Bau
Gropius Bau has handed Abramović the keys to the building for Balkan Erotic Epic, the work she's been remounting in different forms for two decades. The version on view now is closer to the long-form retrospective treatment than the wink-and-shock 2005 video original. Still the same footage of fertility rituals from the former Yugoslavia, still the same provocations about national myth and the body, only spread across multiple rooms and a working week of programming. Whether you find her late-career work indispensable or self-aware brand maintenance probably says more about you than it does about her. Go anyway. Weekdays before noon are the move. You get a quiet hour with the early rooms.
Theatre
Sturm auf Berlin (Vorauffuehrung), Berliner Ensemble
The Berliner Ensemble is running a Vorauffuehrung of Sturm auf Berlin, ostensibly about the Kapp Putsch of 1920 and ostensibly about the present, in the way that everything Brecht-adjacent eventually is. The press release sells it as historical drama. The staging will read as anything but. The preview is the move if you want to catch it before the official run and tell your friends you saw it before it had a star rating. Berliner Ensemble previews tend to be priced soft and seated near the front. Check the website on the day for last-minute returns.
